    Rugby 06

Its that chilly time of year again. And, true to form, EA SPORTS Rugby 06's features all of the above. The gameplay in Rugby 06 now mirrors the real thing closer than ever before, with new moves such as off-load passes, quick line-outs and quick penalties that encourage attacking, momentum-driven rugby. Gamers can also dictate play with their star Impact Players and can choose from a variety of new set plays to pile on the pressure and keep their opponents firmly on the back foot. The game essentially builds on what we've come to know and like from past versions in the series - TV-style presentation, stadiums from all over the world, including the UK's glorious Twickenham, Lansdowne Road, the Millennium Stadium and Murrayfield. Commentary comes courtesty of the respected commentator Ian Robertson and All Black legend Grant Fox. If you are a Rugby fan you will enjoy this game. If not, you'll probably still be as confused about the rules - and all the fuss - as you were before..

  • Sky Odyssey

    Sky Odyssey

Sony's Sky Odyssey for the PS2 is an extensive flight simulator, similar to PilotWings on the Nintendo 64. Anyone who has played Pilot Wings will realise that this is good news. Many pilots have heard about the lost tower of Maximus, It's secrets are legendary. Unfortunately, it is extremely dangerous and difficult to get to. All of the pilots that have previously attempted to find the tower have never returned. Do you think that you can you can accomplish the impossible? To start with, it's a good idea for flying fans to try the training mode. This is a good opportunity to hone your skills in Free Flight before trying your hand at Target mode or painting the sky in Sky Canvas mode. The aim of Target mode is to hit as many floating targets as possible in the in the shortest time. Sky Canvas gives you a smoke trail, in best Red Arrows style, and you use it to draw shapes in the sky, like an old-time sky-writer. You have certain shapes and letters to write and you only have a limited amount of time to fly through the rings. Sounds easy? It isn't, but it is fun! Once you've proven your skills in the fun modes, it's time to try the game for real. Adventure Mode offers you forty missions over which to show you're made of pilot material. And the demanding landscape, made of water-jets, steep valleys and canyons with collapsing walls doesn't make things easy. It is going to take all of your skill as a pilot to successfully negotiate underground caverns, keep away from erupting volcanoes and refuel above a speeding train. Later in Sky Odyssey you can earn new parts that you can use to customise your aircraft. You can change the appearance of your craft, and other attributes like speed and turning circle. At first you only have a handful of planes to choose from, such as the Bi-plane and WW2 fighter, but as you progress through the game, you can unlock more. Sky Odyssey is a mixed kettle of fish visually speaking, some areas are overly detailed and others are depressingly bland. The textures aren't up to much and there is a definite aliasing problem with the 3D objects. Still, it's gameplay that matters and if you like games where you have to think and develop your piloting skills, Sky Odyssey is worth having a look at. Flight sims are not typically considered as console material, but Sky Odyssey is worthy of closer inspection. One of the best PS2 flight simulation games to date!.

    Burnout 3: Takedown

How exactly could Criterion improve on the major step forward that Point of Impact was from the original Burnout? Easy - more of the same, with the emphasis on 'more'. More cars, more speed, more oncoming traffic, and more - many more - gameplay options. We know it sounds a bit Spinal Tap, but Burnout 3 is louder and faster than before -how could it not go up to 11? Game modes included this time around include Risk and Reward, Crash, Race and Online. Within Race mode you get a shedload of options including Single race, Tournament, Lap Eliminator, Burning Lap and Road Rage to name but a few. Multiplayer options are plentiful, with modes featuring up to eight players racing at once in Battle Race and Road Rage. Party Crash is a 'pass the controller' experience for up to 16 people to enjoy. With Network play available, seven different modes are available online, with up to six players able to participate in variations on the Crash and Road Rage modes for example. What's it like to play though? you may ask. Well, like we've already said, more of the same, but faster. There's a typically intrusive vocal soundtrack from a radio disc jockey called Striker who, when he puts a sock in it, plays some pretty good music (hello to The Ramones, Burning Brides and the Von Bondies) and some stuff we'd really prefer not to hear again (Go Betty Go, Moments in Grace, Jimmy Boring World...please!). Driving like a maniac to loud rock music is not to be sniffed at however, and Burnout is the best place to do it. Risking your virtual life - and your lovely shiny car - to get the kudos you need to progress is just as well implemented as we had hoped for. Totally removed from reality, B3 is the place to go when the appeal of Gran Turismo and ToCA start to fade. It's a party game in disguise, and the inclusion of network play and the multiplayer modes means there are gameplay options in abundance. Definitely worth its asking price..

    Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition

Rockstar don't only make Grand Theft Auto Games, you know. The first Midnight Club street racing game put you in the shoes of a bored cabbie who gets drawn into the exciting world of a club that races highly-tuned cars across moonlit cityscapes. The rules were quite simple: win and you win your opponent's car. Of course at the beginning of the game, your taxi-cab wasn't going to win against anything in a straight race, so it was important to use cunning if you wanted to get ahead. Petrolheads on both sides of the Atlantic were kept happy, with parts of Manhattan and London featuring in-game. The second game in the series saw players cruising round any one of three cities, flashing their lights at other drivers to challenge them to races. Now the third instalment comes to consoles, in the form of Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition, so called because it is produced in association with DUB magazine. Once again you can race through three American cities, and the game features licensed cars in a number of different categories: from bling heavy SUVs like Escalades, to tuned sedans, to motorbikes including Harley choppers, and the obligatory Japanese RICE cars, featuring motors created by the legendary Nissan Motor Company amongst other, less celebrated stables. In their partnership with celebrated hip-hop cultural leaders DUB, developers Rockstar San Diego have kept pace with recent developments in the growing genre of car-tuning, street-racing games. Tuning and customisation plays a bigger part than ever before, and the online feature which made the second game successful is back, offering support for up to eight players online. Naturally, this being a Rockstar title, the soundtrack will have been given careful consideration, and with DUB's influence, you can be sure there'll be some pretty heavy beats booming out of your ride as you pick your route through tuning hotspots Atlanta, San Diego and Detroit..

  • The Sopranos: Road to Respect
    0 010
    The Sopranos: Road to Respect

The Sopranos is some of the best telly ever, fact. What of the video game however? Some of our favourite TV shows and films have been given the interactive treatment before, and suffered at the hands of lazy development and lax storylines. The Sopranos: Road to Respect is a different Canoli altogether; it feels like a natural addition to the family, so to speak, with its fruity language and scenes of sleazy, seedy sordidness. A war between the Philadelphia and New Jersey mobs is brewing after the slaying of the Philly boss' nephew. Tony Soprano's crew is fingered as the one responsible for the killing, and as the illegitimate son of the late Big Pussy, this is where you begin this tale of violence, fear and intimidation. Starting out as a 'soldier', you must prove your loyalty to the family by making 'collections' and protecting your turf by any means necessary. Some of the series' top talent is present and correct in Road to Respect, with authentic voice acting from Anthonys Senior and Junior, Paulie Walnuts, Silvio, Christu-fuh! and one or two more familiar faces. These faces are all recognisable, and so are some of the threads they wear. Some of the clothes in the TV series are of unusual taste at least, questionably gaudy at worst, and they're presented in all their glory here. Looking good while you're scaring the pants off of your perceived enemies is all well and good, as it's all about respect. If you find your 'respect meter' dangerously low, you can pay tribute to your bosses to bring your respect back to 100%. You'll find opportunities to do this at Tony's bases of operation: the Vesuvio, the Bada Bing and Satriale's. Earning respect the hard way is the best aspect of the game. Some missions require you to go in with all guns blazing, but some scenarios need something a little more subtle. Using your gun when a star is on show below your Respect Meter will cause a drop in respect. If too many stars are displayed, the crew will make you 'go away' to prevent you from bringing any more attention to its activities. With a genuinely interesting storyline - whether you're a fan of the TV show or not - and the choice to play it tough or cool in scenarios throughout the game, your decision-making impacts on Road to Respect's outcome(s). Definitely worth a few dollars of your hard-earned, say we. Whaddyagonnado?.

  • Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell

    Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell

One of the most hyped up games in recent times, Splinter Cell is also one of the few that is deserving of it. First released on the Xbox, then appearing even more impressively on the PC, it's now finally arrived on PS2 and, despite being somewhat tamer in the visuals department, is an extremely competent conversion. Likened on more than one occasion to Metal Gear 2, Splinter Cell brings that famous infiltration, neutralisation, and sneaking around action to Sony's black box. Taking control of one Sam Fisher - the best field-operative of the secretive black-ops NSA sub-agency Third Echelon - players are sent to execute desperate missions as the government's last resort. Missions such as infiltrating CIA headquarters, seizing critical intelligence and destroying threatening data and equipment are pretty much run-of-the-mill to this guy, so players really have their work cut out. The main objectives are to remain undetected, neutralise every enemy, and exit without a trace. The emphasis is most definitely on the stealth side of things here, with the main character having access to a massive array of nimble moves and abilities. Diving somersaults, hanging off ledges, peeking around corners, and even shinnying up drainpipes are all required if one is to remain undetected. The environments throughout Splinter Cell are all highly interactive, with players able to make use of any objects lying around, shooting out any lights, and taking advantage of shadows. Although not throwing around as many lighting effects as the other two versions of Splinter Cell, the PS2 port still looks the part. The game's detailed environments and skilled use of shadows constantly help to make you feel part of the action. Well worthy of all its accolades, Splinter Cell is a must-have title - it's finally reaching a cross-platform status so now there are few excuses not to have it in your collection..

    Pro Evolution Soccer 6 - Pre-owned

The longer the franchise goes on, Konami still doesn't need to shout out loud and long about a new version of Pro Evolution Soccer. Console footy fans know that for all the bells and whistles and 'look at me' bluster accompanied by the other major soccer game from the other major player in football video games, Konami always comes up with the goods without a shed-load of advertising. 2006's offering is no exception: different enough from its predecessors to warrant more than a cursory glance, yet essentially the formula we've come to know and love. Madly. PES6 for the PS2 and PSP is near-identical to the masterful 360 version: playable across the ether, thanks to Net Play and PSP-to-PSP compatibility, but with ever-so-slightly degraded visuals. No matter. Pro Evolution has always been about gameplay and 6 has it all, and then some. This time around, the shooting system has been refined. Players are able to take a pop at goal more instinctively than last time out, and volleys and half-volleys have had a re-vamp too. Feints, backwards dribbling and retaining possession after a slide tackle are also new features for 2006. Things can get more physical in PES6, with defenders closing down attackers much more in evidence, defensive blocking (legal or illegal) and clever new turns for the more highly rated players in the game. These things take time to learn, but it's a great deal of fun getting there. Pro Evolution Soccer may be the supreme playing experience as far as football's concerned, but there has always been a section of fans dismayed at the series' lack of authentic club and player names. PES6 has its share of misnomers (for Reading, read Berkshire Blues as an example) but hey! There's an edit facility if you feel that way inclined. There again, new licensed (i.e. authentic) game content includes kits and squads for the Czech, French, Australian, English, Italian, Argentinian, Spanish and Swedish national sides. The top French league has also been added, along with big club sides from Europe including Benfica, Sporting Lisbon and Olympiakos. We're sure we've told you this before when referring to Konami's football games, but the beautiful game just got a whole lot better. You lucky people!.

    FIFA Football 2004

Fancy taking on the Young Boys of Bern? How about tackling Grasshoppers? Relax, we're only inviting you to join in a game of Swiss League football in FIFA 2004, just one of many tournaments to choose from in this deep, deep game. FIFA Football 2004 is the most complete and authentic soccer experience. EA's offering for the new season has some stiff competition with Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer 3 figuring strongly and gaining fans left, right and centre. FIFA Football 2004 comes with two big additions to its features list to warrant closer inspection. The feature that really grabbed our attention in FIFA 2004 is EA's new 'Off the Ball' Control. It does exactly what it says on the tin: let's you control the players not in possession of the ball. Luckily enough, you retain control of the player with the ball at his feet too. Hurrah! It's a neat addition to the series' list of features, enabling you to anticipate moves, time your runs, fight for space and put players in prime positions to receive passes and launch attacks. It does take a while to master, but then again, it increases playability no end. The PS2 version jumps even further ahead of the competition with the facility for network play. Mystifyingly enough, the Xbox version doesn't have this facility. Very strange... However, when you want to take on new competitors on your PS2 version, you can connect to EA Sports Online for match up gameplay, tournaments and downloadable content. In a nod to certain other football games, FIFA Football 2004 incorporates a Career mode that offers players the chance to adopt a more 'hands-on' role at their chosen club. Sure, you continue to control the players in the matches, but you now get the chance to take a team from the lower divisions, battle through the leagues, acquire new players, and attempt to turn them into champions. With the usual host of league and cup competitions we've come to expect from the license-laden, best-selling FIFA series, a mind-bogglingly huge selection of teams, and the sheer playability of the game, the FIFA series goes from strength to strength..

    PDC World Championship Darts

The official product of the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship, PDC World Championship Darts offers gamers a true-to-life gameplay experience including real-life players, intuitive controls and top-notch graphics, plus camera work inspired by the gripping TV-style coverage of the Championship. The first port of call is the Quick Game mode. Here a solo player, or two players, can set up a match and play using the game's innovative control scheme. It's here that you can get to grips with what it takes to become the world's number one arrowsmith. You'll play the traditional game here, with the winner of each leg being the first to reach zero from 301, 501 or 701 with a double. Two control methods are offered to players - Amateur and Professional. In both modes, the actual movements required by the player are akin to those used when throwing real darts. To aim, the player places the crosshair over the point they hope to hit on the board, and must take note of the thrust they use via the power meter. Professional mode is similar, but features no assistance from the power meter. Minigames and Pub Classics are featured in the game such as Around the Clock, where doubles in order from one to twenty are required to win the match. Other fun darts variations are featured including Cricket - where one team tries to score before the other team tries to bowl them out by repeatedly hitting the bullseye, and Killer, where the idea is to take out your opponent. In total, there are 13 party games to be enjoyed in PDC World Darts Championship..
